Position: Director of Communications
The Director of Communications is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and managing an organisation's external and internal communications strategy and execution. They play a critical role in building and protecting brand reputation, ensuring consistent messaging across all channels, and driving strategic narratives that engage key stakeholders and support business objectives.
Day to day, a Director of Communications oversees media relations, crisis communications, corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, content strategy, and internal communications. They lead a team of communication professionals, serve as a key advisor to senior leadership, and are adept at managing complex communication challenges in a dynamic environment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies (internal and external) aligned with organisational goals.
- Lead and manage the communications team, providing mentorship and professional development.
- Oversee all media relations, including proactive pitching, reactive responses, and building relationships with journalists.
- Develop and manage crisis communication plans, serving as a key spokesperson or advisor during sensitive situations.
- Drive the organisation's corporate narrative and messaging across all public-facing channels.
- Oversee content strategy and development for corporate websites, social media, press materials, and executive communications.
- Manage internal communications to ensure employee engagement and alignment.
- Advise senior leadership on communication best practices and potential reputational risks.
- Manage relationships with PR agencies, media monitoring services, and other external partners.
- Monitor communication effectiveness, analyse media coverage, and report on KPIs.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Extensive experience (8-10+ years) in senior communications leadership roles, with significant time as a Communications Director or Head of Communications.
- Proven track record of developing and executing successful communication strategies in complex environments.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and executive-level content creation.
- Demonstrated expertise in media relations, crisis communications, and issues management.
- Strong leadership, team management, and strategic thinking abilities.
- Deep understanding of digital communication channels and social media strategy.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage high-stakes communication challenges.
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
